Practical Techniques

The 3-Second Pause

Before responding, count to three. This simple practice:

  • Reduces reactive responses
  • Allows processing time
  • Shows respect for the speaker
  • Improves response quality

Complete Sentences

Challenge yourself to:

  • Listen until they finish their thought
  • Count how often you interrupt
  • Notice the urge to respond and wait

Mirroring Practice

Reflect back what you heard:

  • "What I'm hearing is..."
  • "It sounds like you feel..."
  • "Let me make sure I understand..."
